How to Apostille a Document
Three questions determine the entire apostille process: Where is the document going? What kind of document is it? Who issued it? Walk through them here, then jump to the specific doc-type page that matches.
The Three Questions That Drive Everything
Where will the document be used?
The destination country determines whether you need an apostille (Hague Convention members) or authentication + embassy legalization (non-Hague countries).
Mexico, Germany, UK, Italy, Brazil, S. Korea, Japan, India = apostille. China, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Pakistan = authentication. Read What Is an Apostille?
What kind of document is it?
Document type determines preparation. Vital records need certified copies. Personal documents need notarization first. Federal documents must NOT be notarized.
Who issued it and in what state?
State documents go through that state’s Secretary of State. Federal documents go through the U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

β οΈ DO NOT Notarize Federal Documents Before Apostille
FBI background checks and other federal documents should not be notarized before being submitted for apostille. Notarizing first can invalidate the submission and force you to start over.
