Yes, it’s legal in Kansas
Remote online notarization became law in Kansas on January 1, 2022, under K.S.A. 53-5a15, part of the state’s adoption of the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts. A remotely notarized document has the same legal effect as one notarized in person. This isn’t a workaround or a gray area. It’s a statute, and notaries who perform RON have to register with the Kansas Secretary of State first.
The law requires three things of us, and we do all three on every session:
- Identity verified two independent ways. A knowledge-based quiz built from public records, plus credential analysis of your photo ID. The software checks the ID document itself for signs of tampering, then we compare it to you on camera.
- The session recorded on video. Audio and video of the entire notarial act, start to finish.
- That recording kept for at least ten years. Stored securely and retrievable if anyone ever challenges the signature.
How a session actually goes
- Book a time. We email you a link to the secure platform and instructions for uploading your ID. Do this from a laptop or desktop if you can; phones work but are fiddlier.
- Verify your identity. The knowledge quiz takes a couple of minutes. Then we look at each other on video and confirm you’re the person on the ID.
- Sign on screen. You sign electronically while we watch. We confirm out loud that you understand what you’re signing and that nobody is pressuring you.
- We seal it. Electronic notarial seal plus a tamper-evident certificate that shows if a single byte changes afterward.
- You get the PDF. Downloadable the moment we finish, and emailed for your records.

- The document says it must be notarized in person. Some do. Read the notary block.
- No webcam, or internet too shaky for stable video. The recording has to be continuous.
- You can’t clear the knowledge-based quiz. It’s built from credit-file and public-record history, so a thin file (new to the country, young, or credit-invisible) often fails it. That’s a limit of the software, not a judgment about you.
- Foreign-issued ID. Most RON platforms only read U.S. credentials.
- The receiving party demands wet ink. Some counties, some foreign consulates, and some banks still do. If the document is headed for an apostille, ask us first.

Frequently asked questions
Is an online notarization as valid as an in-person one?
Yes. K.S.A. 53-5a15 gives a remote notarization the same legal effect as one performed in person. The notarial certificate has to state that communication technology was used, and ours does.
Do I have to be in Kansas?
No. You can be anywhere with a webcam and stable internet. The notary has to be physically located in Kansas; you don’t.
What ID works for online notarization?
An unexpired U.S. government photo ID: driver’s license, state ID, passport, or military ID. The platform runs credential analysis on the ID image, and most platforms can’t read foreign-issued IDs.
How long does a session take?
Ten to fifteen minutes for a straightforward document, once your identity is verified. Multi-signer or multi-document sessions run longer.
Can several people sign in one session?

Who keeps the recording, and for how long?

Can I use RON for a will or a real estate closing?
Sometimes. Kansas wills carry witness requirements on top of notarization, and some lenders and county recorders still require ink. Tell us what the document is and who is receiving it, and we’ll tell you before you book whether RON will be accepted.
